When John was deposed, Paggio was free to search for classical manuscripts
in the rich but underutilized monastic library of nothern Europe.
Poggio- one of the most successful collectors of manuscripts among the Renaissance humanists.
1415, found several of Cicero's orations at the monastery at cluny.
His greatest discovery
1416, the complete text of the Roman rhetorician Quintilian's
Institutes of Oratory in the Swiss monastery of St. Gall.
These tests laid the foundation of the humanists' doctrine on rhetoric.
Poggio - had written an important description of Roman ruins
History of the People of Florence
-continued the work of Leonardo Bruni and covered
the century of the Florentine-Milanes wars, 1352-1455.
Like Bruni, Pogio used his sources critically and helped advance the study of history.
